Designed in collaboration with Heida Thurlow, Founder and President of Chantal, the Eva Kettle marries the talents of Thurlow's 30 years of expertise in teakettle technology and Zeisel's graceful and original design. As one of the most celebrated designers of the 20th and 21st centuries, Eva Zeisel's work can be found in permanent collections in museums around the world.

 "Dribbles when pouring" 2009-12-10
By L. C. Sheppard
This kettle is quite handsome. The red is swell. It darkens a bit to a richer red when it gets hot, then returns to its original hue when it cools (the interior, surprisingly enough, is cobalt blue). The kettle is weighted well, a reassuring heft. The lid snaps smartly in place. The whistle is slightly on the piercing side. That is good if you don't want to forget that you're boiling water--it will certainly let you know that the water is steaming. I have returned my kettle, however, after using it once. I returned it because water trickled down the exterior of the spout to the base and spilled everywhere when pouring. No matter how fast or slow I poured water from the kettle, water dibbled and spilled. I was disheartened with this dysfuntion. Perhaps a faulty chrome ring at the tip of the spout is to blame? I could not decipher the issue and so returned it to MOMA, from whence it came. If you obtain one of these kettles and it doesn't dirbble, well, you'll have a fine tool. Personally, I will not attempt another, however.

"Love the Design of my EVA Teakettle " 2009-03-13
By Fay Kowitz (Orange, CA)
I just love the design of the EVA Teakettle. This kettle is a replacement for our 10+ years old, ever dependable, inexpensive enamel kettle that was starting to rust. When I started my teakettle selection process, I noticed I couldn't locate any local retailers that carried the EVA in stock so I could physically check it out for balance, weight, etc., prior to purchasing. I decided to go ahead and order it based on the few reviews online and Chantal's reputation for making excellent teakettles.

I ordered the Chili Red kettle and it is a beautiful addition to my stove top, as well as accent piece in my kitchen. I like the feel of this kettle very much. It has great balance and the capacity allows for enough water for several cups, but not too much weight for my not so young hands/wrists to handle with ease.

I thought it would be nice to have a whistling kettle this time around as my husband is using the kettle more often these days. He tends to travel thru the house while waiting for the water to boil. Chantal is known for their unique harmonic whistle. NOTE: The Eva does not come with a harmonic whistle, which was disappointing; but it does boast of a 'cheerful' whistle sound when boiling. Well, we got a screamer! So we don't use the whistle.

After less than 60 days of pleasurable use of the kettle, the sleeve at the end of the pour spout came off and will not stay on when re-inserted. I also noticed rust starting to form under the sleeve area. Yikes...I don't need that! I have contacted Chantal. They say they have not had this issue on the EVA before and are shipping me a free replacement kettle. I should receive it within the next week.

I will update my review once I have had time to evaluate the replacement kettle's usability. I cannot give a rating higher than a '3' based on my experience with the 1st EVA. I guess I am just stunned that it took less than 60 days for a $90 designer kettle to start rusting when my old inexpensive kettle took 10 years. I don't think my expectations are too high in this situation.

"broken spout and no response from Chantal" 2009-02-09
By Bklyn Bookgrl (Brooklyn, NY)
We received this teapot months ago off our wedding registry and were so excited because it is a great design and from a reputable company. But the metal ring on the spout pulls off with the plastic cap so we are pouring boiling water out of a raw metal edge. After calling Chantal's customer service and being told to email photos and doing so, then repeating the call and email after a couple months and no response, it's now six months later and still no response. This is a no longer reputable company in my view.

 "Excellent Teakettle!" 2009-12-23
By Michael J. Lerch
I got this for my wife who loves to drink tea (and for me... Hot Chocolate!). What sets this apart from the other teakettles is that this has a great design to it. The arched handle makes it easy to pour even when it's heavy with boiling water (the weight of the kettle is average for teakettles), and the handle keeps your hand from getting burned since it doesn't get hot.

Overall I gave it an excellent rating, it looks great, and we'll keep this kettle for a long long time.

 "NOT a harmonica whistle" 2009-12-10
By Soooz
I ordered this tea kettle after much searching for a moderately priced kettle with good ratings and the patented harmonica whistle, as this one advertises as having. The Chantal kettles are consistently well reviewed as being long lasting and solidly built, and the patented "Hohner Harmonica Whistle" was the most important aspect of the kettle for which I wished to purchase.

My husband owned a harmonica whistle kettle prior to my meeting him and he doesn't know where he got it, plus there is no brand name on it. My mother was visiting and loved the sound- a two tone harmonica/train whistle sound that is easy for her to hear. She wears hearing aids and does not pick up high pitches like typical tea kettle whistles. So I began a search for a kettle to buy her, and settled on this one.

The first one I received sounded like a sick cat- a high pitched sound, definitely un-harmonica-like whatsoever. I sent it back, hoping it was just a defect, and exchanged it for another. The second one can't seem to decide its sound- it vacillates between a sputtery, piercing cat noise and a high pitched whistle at irregular patterns, sort of like an old, hoarse cat choir that can't find its pitch. Both noises are nothing like a harmonica noise, and fairly disturbing to the ear that can hear high pitches. It is nothing like the two tone harmonica low sounds for which I had hoped.

I do like the ergonomic handle and I know my mother will adore the cobalt blue, but the whole point of the purchase was getting her a kettle she can hear. The kettle seems sturdy and looks as if it would hold up long term like most Chantal kettles are reviewed to do. However, the packaging says nothing about the patented harmonica whistle, despite the Amazon listing description, and I think the pricier Chantal models ($120 compared to $50) possess the harmonica sound I am looking to buy for mom. That is a pretty expensive tea kettle, and I will continue to search for a more affordable one before I choose to spend so much. For $120 I would want my tea kettle to not only whistle two pleasing harmonica tones, it should do a jig on the stove top as well.

I should have further read the reviews on Amazon before buying this specific Chantal (I had read other reviews of Chantal tea kettles elsewhere) and I would have seen that many people have problems with the whistle. Upon further inspection, I see how air escapes the lid and the cap where the whistle sits does not sit well on the pour spout. When I played with the spout and the lid, however, it didn't help the whistle sound one way or another.

I love this kettle! It does everything a tea kettle should, but with the added bonus of a really melodious whistle. It starts off low, then rises in volume, and has wonderful harmonics that are a pleasure to hear.

Just as pictured and holds a fair amount of water. The whistle is more like a low train whistle and needs some getting used to, but a good purchase.

 "Nice Kettle, Lousy Whistle" 2009-03-13
By D. Migliaccio (Northern Virginia)
I've had my Chantal Enamel-on-Steel 1.8 quart Loop Teakettle for just under a year now. It's a fine kettle; the enamel finish is still in good condition, it's shapely and easy on the eye, it heats water quickly. All this is incidental to the main the reason I wanted this kettle, which was its harmonic whistle. Well, guess what, folks - it's a lousy kettle if what you want is a dependable whistle.

My first whistle died about three months after I received the kettle as a birthday gift. The harmonic sound was the first to go; I got by for a week or two with a single-note whistle and then that gave out as well. I tried the cleaning methods suggested at the Chantal website, to no avail. I finally called their 1-800 number and a representative said she would send another whistle.

The second whistle lasted a little bit less than two months. Again, the recommended cleaning did not work, and again, I called the 1-800 number and was sent a third whistle.

This third whistle lasted only about three months, gasping along for its final week on a single-note whistle before that went bye-bye a few days ago. I called the 1-800 number and after pressing the appropriate buttons, was directed to a recording that recommended I email Chantal. Apparently their live customer service has gasped its last as well.

I've emailed Chantal for another whistle, but to be honest, I'm not hopeful for a response. I'll probably still use the kettle; it still boils water just fine. But if you're looking for a kettle with a dependable whistle - LOOK ELSEWHERE.

For Christmas my mother requested a teakettle that was not made in China. This was not an easy quest, but I finally found a great looking group of Teakettles by Chantal (Made in Germany). She is very pleased with this kettle and although the price tag was more than I was planning to pay, it is very sturdy. The whistle is extremely loud, so you won't forget you boiling water and you can open the spout if you do not wish to have a whistle.

The Chantal Enamel-on-Steel teapot is a beautifully designed and "harmonious" addition to your kitchen. I just purchased my second for personal use, the first having lasted over 20 years and have made sure my children have one too. It is solid and well built kettle and the Hohner harmonica whistle makes it a lot of fun. The addition of the hotpad that fits over the curved handle is a great idea. That handle gets very hot.

 "Crazy for Chantal!" 2000-12-22
By Michela (Seattle, WA, USA)
The Chantal 2 1/2-quart teakettle is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also energy efficient because it heats water to the boiling point in a short period of time. I bought a Chantal teakettle when it first came on the market, and I have used it on a Jenn-aire ceramic stovetop, a gas burner range, and an electric range--all with good results for heating water quickly. However, I have had to ask Chantal to replace my teakettle twice because of rust on the inside near the lid. Also the lid would become stuck in place and impossible to remove, so I would fill it with water through the pouring spout. The charming two-tone Hohner "harmonica" top of the spout has stopped playing on the one I have now. I think the reason for the problems with the Chantal teakettle have everything to do with the hardness of one's water. Yet, I love this teakettle so much that I will replace it myself if I must.

"As Good As Tea Kettles Get (Too Bad None Are All That Great)" 2009-07-21
By Christopher T. Dahle (Del Norte, Colorado USA)
I have to remember that it's JUST a teakettle. We bought it for the fun color and the happy sounding whistle. It heats water. The lid fastens securely so you don't have to worry about it falling off and letting hot water splash all over. The handle feels securely mounted and you can pour hot water with one hand and not get scalded.

I just wish there was a silicone gasket on the pour spout because condensate is able to drip from the whistle and does so until the water in the kettle completely cools. This is very annoying if you are a neat-freak, which, really, I am not. But still, it's annoying to have to wipe up, and since we have lots of minerals in our water, I can see that there will soon be a crust of mineral precipitate underneath the pour spout, just like on every other tea kettle I've ever owned.

 "Technical flaw" 2008-10-31
By Glenn Doroshenko (New York, NY)
The craftsmanship of this kettle is outstanding. Paint is thick and rich, will change its shade a bit with temperature. The whistle is different here, it sounds more like locomotive signal - loud and low frequency. I used it on a gas stove and whistling nose lid (made of plastic) burned at the bottom a bit jamming the whistling element, and now lid does not close tight, therefore - no whistling. Looks like this kettle was designed with electrical cooker in mind.

The main lid tends to get stuck half way when I close it, allowing steam to escape, which leads to no whistling.

The handle is ergonomically located slightly on a back for no-strain pouring and is always cool enough to touch.

Time to boil is slightly longer due the spherical shape of this kettle.

"Not Worth the Inflated Price!" 2009-08-27
By Avid Reader (Tucker, GA USA)
I purchased a similar Chantal stainless steel saucepan less than five years ago, and I have a few other Chantal products. Overall, the cookware is of good quality, but it is way over-priced.

PROS: The saucepan cooks beautifully and has a nice, heavy-gauge bottom, which evenly distributes heat without burning or scorching. The handle tends to remain cool, unless the burner under the pan is set very high. The glass lid makes it easy to see whether food is simmering or rapidly boiling without taking the lid off.

CONS: I had the saucepan less than five years, and while washing it in the sink the other day, the handle just fell off. Literally. There is no way to get the handle back onto the pot. It appears that the handle was welded to the pot at two, very small points, which gave way. I certainly expect that for the price paid for this cookware, I would get at least 10 years out of it.

I will not purchase Chantal again, but will opt for Calphalon, or even Anolon, both of which I own and have functioned very well for over 10 years now!

I got it here at Amazon and I'm so happy with my purchase. Yes it is pricy but the quality of steel enamel is really good. It also works with induction cooktop. Lighter than Le Crueset, which is a cast iron, little cheaper too! And easy to clean. The glass top really makes it look so much better and you can see what you're cooking. I highly recommend this product.

 "24 years strong!" 2009-12-10
By B. Galiardi (Seattle, WA USA)
I purchased a set of this cookware back in 1986 while I was working retail in a housewares department, putting myself through college. I thought I was pretty brand savvy at the time and took the plunge with Chantal. Sure they were a little pricey at the time for a student, but I tell you after 24 years of hard wear and tear, these pans are a CHAMP! It was worth each and every penny I spent! They cook evenly and clean up amazingly well, even when I still manage to burn the rice to the bottom, A little hot water soak while I load the washer with the rest of the dishes and after all these years, the mess still wipes right out. The glass lids are wonderful and as big of a clutz as I am, I'm happy to report that every single lid remains unbroken to this day. My husband just talked me into my first induction stove top and lucky for me, they are indeed magnetic and work beautifully. Stove top to oven, these pans do it all - FOREVER! I have used the heck out of these pans every day and honestly, you couldn't pay me to switch to another brand. I admit there was a time before I bought Chantal that I longed for Le Creuset cast iron pans, but the weight would have probably broken me over time. And I'm not sure they would have worked with the induction stove anyway.

Highly recommended! You will not be disappointed with this beautiful and versatile cookware!

These are harder to clean than stainless steel pans, and also somewhat thin. They are attractive, however.  "metal scratches" 2010-01-10
By T. Taylor (Portland OR)
I know we aren't supposed to use metal utensils in this pot but I forgot and scrambled some eggs with a fork. Now there are lots of ugly gray scratches. As far as I know, they won't come off . . . ever. Will they?

 "They work for me!" 2008-11-03
By Michelle J. Boucher (Nashville, TN)
I am glad I didnt read the reviews before purchasing..I was going for the 'healthier' cookware option. I had teflon that was coming off in my food.

Anyway, I purchased the glossy white 7 pc. set and I tell you I love it. I did have the sticking issue the first time. I soaked it and had no problem washing it, I just had to soak it. The second time I used it I used Crisco Butter spray. I made an omelete and it came out just about pretty dang perfect! The trick was using the spray. With the prior, I used olive oil. It says in the instructions to not use sprays, but I did and it's worked just fine. I have not used Pam or any of the other ones yet. Also, I think a trick is heating the pan slowly-on a gradient. Instead of say just turning it on high and placing the pan right on. I hope this helps!

 "great cooking tool" 2008-05-24
By Jaw (California)
I've used mine for many years, to scramble eggs. That's all i've used it for and have used it many times. It still looks as good as new. It's effortless to clean. I cook with a little melted butter and eggs do not stick. There is some egg left on the pan of course, but it easily comes right off when rubbed with a stiff cleaning brush or rag. It's nice to know that it is a safe material that will not release dangerous fumes into the air. I use a nonstick pan for cooking meat, just because this one is too small, but i am uncomfortable with what i've read about the hazards of nonstick material when heated. I am now going to buy the 11 1/2 inch version.

"Great Looking but still sticks" 2008-04-02
By Charles Heath
I bought this pan as a trial before getting the complete set. The plan was to move away from using any of the standard non-stick teflon like material.

My primary test was fried eggs and I've now used the pan about 10+ times. I've tried olive oil, butter, and bacon grease several times each. I can manage to manipulate the frying eggs to prevent sticking initially but once the eggs are turned over, they almost always stick to some degree.

I tried olive oil, butter, and bacon grease on low and medium heat with low heat creating the most sticking.

Frying hamburger patties works well but results in a more difficult to clean pan than the cooking eggs; some muscle is needed when hand washing.

Cleaning is not as easy as I've read in some reviews. Wiping out the pan with soapy water and a wash cloth or sponge takes some work. It usually comes out clean in the dishwasher but not always. Teflon and teflon like material always come clean in the dishwasher or cleans easily when cleaning by had.

It is, however, a very beautiful cooking piece and there doesn't seem to be any better non-stick alternatives that are not teflon and/or teflon material. I give it high marks for looks and construction and lower marks for non-stick effectiveness. It is very solidly made and the handle has remained cool for the length of time used for eggs or hamburger.

"Love this pan - extremely well made" 2009-11-16
By bookmark momma (deep in the heart)
Love this pan It is made in Germany and has a stay cool ergonomic handle and a glossy enamel red finish

The interior is enamel and performs so well We cannot expect this to act like teflon but clean up is easy

with a tawashi made out of net ( etsy) Chantal says you can use metal utensils but I will not I have owned

Chantal enamel products and they last a lifetime and are a joy to look upon I enjoy the new copper fusion line

It is heavy and handles well but unlike the cast iron I will be able to carry this when I am old haha

We need to read up on what cooking surface is healthy and enameled glass seems to be winning

 "Nice, heavy duty pan" 2008-06-27
By Katy K. (Saginaw, MI USA)
This pan is nice & heavy duty, but food sometimes does stick to it. The trick is to pre-heat pan on medium heat and cook food on medium heat ONLY. It heats evenly and cooks quickly once it's hot. Stuck food washes out easily. The inside does not chip or peel. I would recommend this pan...so much healthier than teflon!!! I use it to cook everything!

 "Failed on first trial" 2009-11-29
By Kevin Courcey (Sarasota, FL)
Bought this to replace a similar size Green Pan since we liked the ceramic non-stick, non-toxic coating on the Green Pan, but wanted a longer lasting pan. I assumed this enamel on steel pan would be a step up, however when I came home from work the pan was sitting on the counter filled with water and the remains of a fried egg with a note from my wife saying "This pan doesn't work!" Sure enough, she had followed all the directions about using a little oil, using low to medium heat, etc., but the egg stuck anyway. And stuck so hard that even soaking overnight didn't release it. I scrubbed it out several times, finally resorting to stove top cleaner to remove the egg! Back it went. We're trying a Scanpan next. If that doesn't work, we're going back to the Green Pans. They're reasonably priced and work well even if they don't last forever.

 "Cooking with Elegance" 2007-10-30
By Kerri Elders (Fort Worth, Texas USA)
Love this omelette pan! It's a great healthy alternative to nonstick (Teflon) pans. If you're worried about the health risks of cooking with Teflon, this is a fabulous alternative, since you are essentially cooking on glass (nontoxic and won't deleteriously flavor your food while you cook). Use butter or coconut oil to cook with this pan (or cooking spray, if you're watching your calories) and this pan really is virtually nonstick. I love mine so much (in Cobalt Blue), that I bought an 8" omelette pan (in White) to go with it--the smaller one is ideal for cooking eggs in the morning & the larger (10") works great for saute duty or for grilling sandwiches, etc.

Beautiful enamel finish; very elegant cooking pans that look great on the stovetop and hanging from a wall-mounted pot rack. This is some of my favorite cookware & heats evenly & quickly. My color preference after buying two? White--it's a clean and bright white. The blue is a deep blue--very pretty, but tends to look just a little duller after several heatings. Plus, food stands out on white. Just a personal preference, for what it's worth.
